The Tarmac Sport combines all of the complete performance that the Tarmac is known the world over for with the durable shifting of Shimano's 105. Consider it the perfect bike to grow along with you as you explore the open roads ahead. Along the way, you'll also find a Grand-Tour-winning geometry, plus a FACT 9r carbon fiber construction. For the spec, we selected components that deliver.

It's been over 20 years since the first Volkswagen GTI hit the streets, and after a few year stent of the original hot-hatch being not so original and not so hot, it's back and in full force.Returning to its sports car roots, the GTI is clothed in a body typical of the German auto company; eye catching, but simple.Under the hood you'll find VW's 2.0 liter 4-cylinder engine, turbocharged to pump out a clean, powerful 200 horsepower and 207 ft lbs of torque, propelling you from 0-60 in just 6.5 seconds. The '08 GTI comes standard with the enthusiast-preferred 6-speed manual transmission.Optional is the 6-speed 'manu-matic' tranny affectionately referred to as the DSG which stands for Direct Shift Gearbox. This DSG transmission is quite possibly one of the most impressive aspects of this 5th-gen hot hatch. The DSG is not a true automatic, although it does bear an automatic shifting mode, however instead of using a torque converter as automatics do, the DSG relies on two separate clutches that work together by preselecting both the gear above and below your current position. At the 'wap' of the steering wheel-mounted paddle or the gearbox mounted stick, the transmission snaps into gear in a mere 0.8 seconds.
We got our hands on a 2-door, tornado red GTI equipped with the DSG and took it out for the day.We put it to the test on the Southern California traffic stricken streets and slung it through the turns of So-Cal's infamous Ortega Highway. When we first climbed into the car we were a little taken back by the plaid (iterlagos as they're called) seating surfaces, but as Volkswagen puts it, 'For some, it's a quirky choice. For the enthusiast, it's the only choice.'And we couldn't agree more. The refinement expected from a German automobile was very present in the selection of the materials. It was far from ricer. We felt more like we were sitting behind the wheel of a luxury sports car than a 4-banger import. The next thing we took notice of was the leather-wrapped steering wheel which is squared off on the bottom third, reminding us of something we'd find in a race car.And we like race cars.
Crystal maidens gif. On the streets the car felt refined; sporty, but not too stiff for everyday driving. The GTI begged to be whipped through traffic, in and out of slower cars. The turbo-lag was almost non-existent and completely non-existent using VW's Launch Control. We'll talk a little more about that later. From red light to red light the car was exhilarating.Crack the windows a bit, turn the radio off and you'll find yourself grinning as you listen to the turbo spool up and the punchy hiss of the shift while you shoot from one light to the next.As we approached the base of the mountain we found ourselves feeling anxious for the miles of winding roads ahead. We threw the shifter into its optional ‘sport' mode and blasted up the hill. The first set of turns were invigorating as we got a feel for what the car was capable of, but as we moved on we felt a lack of confidence in the GTI although it bit down hard on whatever we threw at it there was almost an air of timidness. The steering was not quite as responsive as the Civic SI or Mini Cooper S, but it wasn't loose enough to leave us feeling uninspired. In fact, as we exited the other side of the mountain we opted to go back the way we came as opposed to taking the freeway.

Launch Control… sounds kinda spacey… sounds kinda fun.It is.Open up the owner's manual for the GTI and you'll find specific instructions. In essence it's nothing more than a power brake.Disengage the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) put the transmission in either ‘Sport' or manual mode.Keep your left foot on the brake and rev the engine with your right foot. This allows you to spool the turbo up before you launch. When you're ready, let your foot off of the brake and fly.The kick is quite enough to toss your passenger into the rear seat if they're not ready for it.But don't use it too much, or you'll be forking out $190 each to replace the Bridgestone Potenza tires that the GTI comes equipped with.
All in all, the GTI is a great car. It's perfect for the boy-racer that's looking to grow up a bit. With its fold-flat seats there's plenty of room for all your favorite gear.Quick and agile, the GTI is perfect for zipping through traffic, or tossing it around on your way up to the slopes. It's far from a supercar, but its right back where it should be.The original hot hatch has returned.
